HOUSE RESOLUTION
recognizing and supporting the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association for their efforts in preparing for the designation of WaikĪkĪ - Kauhale O Hoʻokipa as a hawaii state and national scenic byway.
WHEREAS, the National Scenic Byways Program is part of the United States Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration; and
WHEREAS, the vision of the Federal Highway Administration's National Scenic Byways Program is "to create a distinctive collection of American roads, their stories and treasured places"; and
WHEREAS, the Hawai‘i Scenic Byways Program is administered through the State Department of Transportation; and
WHEREAS, scenic byways are roads that tell a special story, roads with outstanding historical, scenic, archaeological, cultural, natural, and recreational intrinsic qualities, and roads that will benefit from a coordinated strategy for tourism and economic development; and
WHEREAS, local community byway sponsor groups manage community scenic byways to protect and enhance scenic byways through collaboration with government agencies, businesses, and community groups; and
WHEREAS, the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, a non-profit organization, sponsors a local byway committee for the Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa Scenic Byway; and
WHEREAS, Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association co-founder George Kanahele once stated, "Waikīkī's significance is as a place of history, not destination"; and
WHEREAS, "Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa" translates to "Waikīkī - Home of Hospitality" and is descriptive of the meaning and feeling of Waikīkī as we know it today; and
WHEREAS, Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa Scenic Byway is a collaborative effort among the community, businesses, and government to promote and share the special intrinsic qualities of Waikīkī, particularly the role Waikīkī played in Hawai‘i's and the island of O‘ahu's history; and
WHEREAS, through the telling of stories about Waikīkī, Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa Scenic Byway helps to educate the public regarding Waikiki's historical and cultural significance; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body hereby recognizes the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association for its hard work in preparing for the designation of Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa as a state scenic byway and supports the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association's work; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body supports the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association's efforts in preparing the Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa Corridor Management Plan; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body supports the subsequent designation of Waikīkī - Kauhale O Ho‘okipa Scenic Byway as a National Scenic Byway; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association, Director of Transportation, Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, and Director of the City and County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services.
