HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
URGING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO INCLUDE the topic of ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION as a mandated instructional element in driver education courses statewide.
WHEREAS, organ and tissue donation can save lives; and
WHEREAS, drivers in the State may designate themselves as organ donors on their driver's license pursuant to section 286-109.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes; and
WHEREAS, when applying for a driver's license a person may not be fully educated about the organ and tissue donation process and may opt-out of the program due to a lack of information instead of an aversion to being an organ donor; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Education do not currently include organ and tissue donation as a mandated instructional element of driver education courses; and
WHEREAS, such education may increase the number of organ donor designees and, therefore, increase the opportunities for successful organ and tissue transplants throughout the State; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of
the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013,
the Senate concurring, that the Department of Transportation and the Department
of Education are urged to include organ and tissue donation information as a
mandated instructional element in driver education courses; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution
be transmitted to the Director of Transportation and the Superintendent of
Education.
