A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Farrington high school is one of the most populous schools in the State; over 2,600 students attend Farrington high school each year. Not only students but also members of the community use its facilities. In particular, the auditorium has historically been used for student performances and for classrooms. Additionally, a local church has rented Farrington's auditorium on weekends since nearly 7,000 members of the community attended church services there.
On November 23, 2012, heavy rains caused a large part of the auditorium's roof to collapse, just hours before many students from Farrington high school and other high schools were scheduled to attend an event there. As a result of the collapse, many events scheduled to take place in the auditorium have been cancelled until other arrangements can be made, which disadvantages Farrington high school students and members of the community.
Accordingly, the purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to replace the roof of the Farrington high school auditorium.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2013-2014, and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015, for the purposes of replacing the roof of the auditorium at Farrington high school.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2013.
