The
purpose of this briefing is to assess the economic impact of the military in
Hawaii as well as how the federal budget cuts to the military will affect
Hawaii.
Last
year, the Hawaii Institute for Public Affairs and the Chamber of Commerce of
Hawaii, commissioned the RAND Corporation to provide a comprehensive report on
the military’s impact in Hawaii. An in-depth report regarding the
military in Hawaii has not been done since 1963. Our State has gone through
almost 50 years of economic change since then in which the military presence
has played a role. The RAND National Defense Research Institute Report,
"How Much Does Military Spending Add to Hawaii's Economy?" was
completed last June. The report provides extensive information and
statistics regarding the military’s economic impact in Hawaii.
Jim Hosek, senior
economist at the RAND Corporation and Editor of The RAND Journal of
Economics will be providing an overview and update to this report.
Mr. Holsek is an expert on defense manpower and has published studies in
the areas of recruiting, retention, compensation, deployment, and personnel
quality. His recent research includes work on U.S. competitiveness in science
and technology and the U.S. science and engineering workforce. He has written
numerous publications.
