A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to Indigenous people's day.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Section 8-1.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:

     "[[]§8-1.5[]]  [Discoverers'] Indigenous Peoples' Day.  The second Monday in October shall be known as [Discoverers' Day, in recognition of the Polynesian discoverers of the Hawaiian Islands,] Indigenous Peoples' Day, to:

     (1)  Recognize the countless indigenous people who perished as a result of the indigenous-European confrontation;

     (2)  Recognize those indigenous people who have survived the past five hundred years; and

     (3)  Educate the general public about the ongoing plight of indigenous people, provided that this day is not and shall not be construed to be a state holiday."

     SECTION 2.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
