A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO HEALTH.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the closure of Hawaii Medical Center East resulted in the loss of Hawaii's only certified organ transplant center, leaving over four hundred patients waiting on the transplant list with the sole option of traveling to the mainland to receive transplantation services.
The legislature also finds that one of the services no longer provided in the State is bone marrow transplantation. This procedure has been used to treat patients with leukemia, aplastic anemia, lymphomas such as Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, immune deficiency disorders, and some solid tumors such as breast and ovarian cancer.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys to the department of health to implement a new bone marrow transplantation program in the State.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $500,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2012-2013 for the implementation of a new bone marrow transplantation program in the State.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of health for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2012.
Report Title:
Bone Marrow Transplantation Program; Department of Health; Appropriation
Description:
Appropriates moneys to be expended by the department of health for the implementation of a new bone marrow transplantation program in the State to fill the void left by the closure of Hawaii Medical Center East, which housed the only organ transplant center in the State. (SD1)
