HOUSE RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 2012 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii's Living Treasures.
WHEREAS, the Legislature finds that the true beauty of our island State lies in its people, who share their immense talents, knowledge, and resources to make Hawaii a better place to live; and
WHEREAS, since 1976, the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii's Living Treasures Program has been honoring individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their fields and who have made lifelong and significant contributions toward creating a more humane society; and
WHEREAS, five Living Treasures, Goro Arakawa, Barbara Fusako Kawakami, Dr. Ben Finney, Lynette Kahekili Paglinawan, and Gordon Mark, were honored at the 37th Annual Living Treasures of Hawaii Program on February 4, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Goro Arakawa, a civic leader and accomplished businessman, helped found Hawaii's Plantation Village in Waipahu, an outdoor history museum that showcases the experience of Hawaii's plantation workers; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Fusako Kawakami has dedicated her life to preserving and protecting Japanese culture and traditions and is best known for her expertise in Japanese immigrant clothing; and
WHEREAS, Co-Founder of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Dr. Ben Finney is known worldwide for his work in Polynesian navigation; and
WHEREAS, a key force in the Hawaiian renaissance, Lynette Kahekili Paglinawan perpetuates Hawaiian culture and music and works to draw peace from conflict by practicing ho‘oponopono; and
WHEREAS, a benevolent educator and extraordinary ‘ukulele player, Gordon Mark set his mark by fusing Western classical and Hawaiian music and working tirelessly to compile a repertoire of more than 1,000 songs; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, that this body hereby recognizes the 2012 Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii's Living Treasures, congratulates and expresses its gratitude to Goro Arakawa, Barbara Fusako Kawakami, Dr. Ben Finney, Lynette Kahekili Paglinawan, and Gordon Mark for their outstanding lifelong contributions to the community, and extends its aloha and best wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.
