HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

RECOGNIZING WHITNEY HOUSTON AS ONE OF THE GREATEST RECORDING ARTISTS EVER AND CELEBRATING HER LIFE AS A HUMANITARIAN.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey and passed away on February 11, 2012; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston was an American recording artist, actress, producer, and model and recognized as the most-awarded female recording artist of all time; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston is the only recording artist to chart seven consecutive number 1 "Billboard 100" with her hits, "Saving All My Love for you," "How Will I know," "Greatest Love of All," "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," "Didn't we Almost Have it All," "So Emotional," and "Where do Broken Hearts Go;" and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston sold over 170 million albums and singles during her career, captured six Grammy Awards, and starred in many movies, displaying support and understanding for racial equity and respect for all people; and

 

     WHEREAS, on January 27, 1991, with America entangled in the Persian Gulf War, Whitney Houston performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV which has been considered the benchmark for singers, and Whitney Houston donated all proceeds of her rendition of the "The Star Spangled Banner" performance to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston put together the "Welcome Home Heroes" concert at the Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia in front of 3,500 servicemen and women, with HBO, for the soldiers fighting in the Gulf War and their families, wherein HBO received its highest rating ever; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston is hereby recognized as a civil and human rights advocate and humanitarian who supported Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid movement through numerous performances; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston formed numerous organizations which raised funds for the needs of children worldwide, seeking to organize care for the homeless, children with cancer and children with AIDS; and

 

     WHEREAS, Whitney Houston did struggle with substance addiction, however, this resolution seeks to allow her fight with addiction to be a strong message to encourage others to obtain the necessary treatment to address their personal struggle with addiction; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, hereby recognizes Whitney Houston for being one of the greatest recording artist ever, who achieved major success in creating social movements to bring about equality, civil rights, human rights, and being a humanitarian for people in need and for supporting the men and women of the United States military for defending our country's freedom; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the family of Whitney Houston.
