HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING THE UNITED STATES NAVY FOR STRONG ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP IN HAWAII.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the United States Navy promotes environmental and Hawaiian cultural stewardship in the State of Hawaii, including celebration of the Makahiki, care for the oceans and land, and protection of plants and habitats of native ecosystems; and

 

     WHEREAS, the United States Navy, as partners in our community, has made significant environmental and cultural contributions to the State of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., annually recognizes U.S. Navy ships, installations and personnel from commands around the world for outstanding environmental performance in promoting environmental stewardship; and

 

     WHEREAS, naval installations in the State of Hawaii earned four of the Chief of Naval Operations' 2011 Environmental Awards and are recognized as "best in the Navy," nationally and internationally; and

 

     WHEREAS, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam earned the installation award for Cultural Resources Management, the Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center Pearl Harbor Environmental Quality Team earned the team award for Environmental Quality, and the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai earned two awards for Natural Resources Conservation; and

 

     WHEREAS, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam further promotes environmental stewardship by utilizing photovoltaic arrays to lower energy costs in support of U.S. Navy and Department of Defense initiatives, and operates a fuel oil reclamation facility to reduce disposal costs and dependence on foreign oil; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai partnered with Ke Kula Niihau O Kekaha and the National Tropical Botanical Garden to develop an educational display of habitat types that existed on the Mana Plain prior to western contact; and

 

     WHEREAS, Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge to ensure the survival of Laysan Albatross populations located at the facility; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012, on behalf of the people of Hawaii, that this body honors and thanks Commander, Navy Region Hawaii: Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, for their achievements towards protecting the environment of the State of Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body offers Commander, Navy Region Hawaii: Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and Pacific Missile Range Facility, Kauai, its best wishes and warmest aloha in its continuing commitment to preserve the natural beauty and environment of the State of Hawaii.
