A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO PUBLIC EDUCATION.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, part II, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- Sustainability courses; incorporation into public high school science curriculum. (a) Beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, all public high schools shall include sustainability courses as part of the science curriculum or shall include sustainability issues as part of existing science courses. The sustainability instruction shall encompass topics such as the development of the State's alternative energy, ocean, environmental, recycling, and technological resources or capabilities.
(b) The board, in its discretion, may grant a waiver to any individual school subject to the requirements of this section. The board shall adopt policies and procedures to grant a waiver under this section."
SECTION 2. The department of education, in collaboration with the board of education, shall submit to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2013, a report on its progress and efforts to implement the requirements of section 1 of this Act, including any proposed legislation.
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
