HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

HONORING "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA OF THE WAIANAE BOXING CLUB.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is proud to recognize those organizations and special individuals who exemplify good sportsmanship and goodwill to the people and youth of our State; and

 

     WHEREAS, established in 1962 by Honolulu and Waianae native, Coach "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA, the Waianae Boxing Club has kept the youth off of the streets and away from drugs, as it boasts a proud and long-standing tradition of producing champion fighters to represent the people of Hawaii at national and international boxing competitions; and

 

     WHEREAS, before the founding of the Waianae Boxing Club, "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA enjoyed an impressive boxing career in the United States Army and also came from a family of athletic competitors, which include his father, Anton, who was also an outstanding boxer, and his grandmother, Anita, the oldest runner to compete in the Honolulu Marathon at 80-years-old; and

 

     WHEREAS, "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA is the first Hawaii boxing coach to produce a National Golden Gloves champion who also won an unprecedented 16 national championships, and secured a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games; and

 

     WHEREAS, a father, grandfather, foster parent, coach, and mentor, "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA has not only taught his boxing protégés valuable lessons at the Waianae Boxing Club that can be applied to all aspects of their lives, but he has also inspired them to persevere and achieve their goals through hard work, sacrifice, determination, and leadership; and
     WHEREAS, the Waianae Boxing Club continues its proud heritage of producing champions under the direction and tutelage of "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA, a role model and advocate for Hawaii's youth who continues to pass on his vast boxing knowledge and create individuals who strive to become champions both inside and outside of the ring; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, that this body hereby respectfully conveys its deep appreciation and admiration for the selfless contributions of "PAPA" FRED PEREIRA to the Waianae community as well as the community-at-large, and extends to him and his boxing ohana its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
