HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
requesting the Hawaii Public housing authority to develop strategies that would increase access to public housing for qualified applicants.
WHEREAS, homelessness and a shortage of affordable housing continue to be two of the State's most persistent and challenging social problems; and
WHEREAS, the availability of clean, safe, and decent housing is integral to an individual's or family's emergence from poverty; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority reports that there are nearly ten thousand people on the waiting list for federal public housing and approximately seven thousand five hundred people on the waiting list for state public housing; and
WHEREAS, there are a number of unoccupied public housing units in the State and the Hawaii Public Housing Authority currently maintains and enforces policies that effectively exclude qualified applicants; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii Public Housing Authority is requested to develop strategies that would increase access to public housing for qualified applicants; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Hawaii Public Housing Authority is requested to submit a report on its findings and recommendations to the Legislature not later than twenty days prior to the convening of the 2012 Regular Session; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Executive Director of the Hawaii Public Housing Authority.
