HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII TO CATALOGUE ALL TREES OF HISTORIC VALUE AND ADOPT A PROCEDURE FOR BUILDING DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND EXPANSION THAT PERMITS THE PRESERVATION OF SUCH TREES.
WHEREAS, a nearly one-hundred year old comose fig tree growing on the grounds of the University of Hawaii at Manoa was recently cut down and removed in preparation for a planned expansion of the Campus Center; and
WHEREAS, the comose fig tree was planted there as part of the heritage collection of trees planted on the Manoa campus by Joseph Rock, the Territory's first botanist and the university's first botany professor; and
WHEREAS, the comose fig tree was one of only a few of its species in the entire State and has been called part of the University of Hawaii at Manoa's living history; and
WHEREAS, the original construction plans for the Campus Center expansion accommodated the continued existence of the comose fig tree, but were later revised to require its removal; and
WHEREAS, the planned expansion merely involves recreational and not educational or research facilities; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2011, the Senate concurring, that the University of Hawaii is requested to catalogue all trees of historic value and adopt a procedure for building design, construction, and expansion that permits the preservation of such trees; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii and the President of the University of Hawaii.
