The purpose of  this joint informational briefing is to discuss possible land acquisition and/or use from, but not limited to, federal, state, county, private corporations and private landowners for the purpose of secured safe zones, affordable rental units, and/or Housing First units, for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Hawaii.

 

Statistical data confirms that Hawaii has 5,834 homeless.  The briefing seeks to review the possible acquisition and/or use of land which may be used to serve the homeless.

 

The ten (10) largest land owners in Honolulu, Hawaii have been invited to participate in the briefing to reduce homelessness in Hawaii.

 

A coordinated effort to better align land use with local, state, federal, and private homeless agencies will result in greater effectiveness toward reducing homelessness in Hawaii.

 

In conclusion, the Chairs of Housing and Human Services will summarize the solutions ascertained from this briefing to effectively reduce homelessness in Hawaii.  The Committee Chairs may also identify future legislation to reduce homelessness.

 

The following organizations have been invited to participate in this briefing:

 

Top ten (10) land owners in Honolulu, Hawaii

Individual property owners

State Department of Land and Natural Resources

State Department of Human Services

Hawaii Public Housing Authority

State Homeless Programs

Department of Community Services, City and County of Honolulu

Civic and Community Organizations who provide human services

State and County rental housing and low-income housing programs

Agencies and faith based organizations which receive state funding to address homelessness and other related human services or housing providers of emergency and transitional housing.
