Description:

Allows recipients of grants and subsidies for school bus service to continue using buses that are older than ten years but no older than twenty years from the manufacture date of the bus, if the bus is maintained in good operating and safe condition.

A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO GRANTS AND SUBSIDIES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 42F, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§42F-   School buses. A state agency disbursing an appropriation under section 42F-104 to a recipient to provide school bus services, may allow the recipient to utilize buses that are ten years or older from the date of manufacture but in no event older than twenty years from the date of manufacture; provided that the recipient demonstrates that the mechanical maintenance of the bus, including but not limited to, installation of new component parts such as engine, brakes, and transmission, adequately provides for public safety."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
