THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

45

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR CAMPBELL HIGH SCHOOL

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  It is incumbent upon the State to ensure that all public school classrooms are proper learning environments.  For classrooms in certain geographical areas, a proper learning environment requires air conditioning to overcome stifling climate conditions.  The classrooms at James Campbell High School are not equipped with air conditioning systems.  During long spells of oppressively hot weather in Ewa Beach, these non‑air-conditioned classrooms become unbearable and hinder the academic performance of both students and faculty members.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to install an air conditioning system at James Campbell High School.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $12,000,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009-2010 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2010-2011, to install an air conditioning system at James Campbell High School.

The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2009.
