A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to newborn screening.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Section 321-291, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended to read as follows:
"§321-291 [Tests for phenylketonuria,
hypothyroidism, and other metabolic diseases.] Newborn screening for
certain diseases, disorders, and deficiencies. (a) The department of
health [may] shall specify diseases, disorders, and
deficiencies to be screened for in newborn infants and methods to be
employed to best prevent mortality and morbidity within the population of the
State. Among the diseases, disorders, and deficiencies so specified, the
department shall also screen for:
(1) Defects of biopterin cofactor biosynthesis;
(2) Defects of biopterin cofactor regeneration;
(3) Dienoyl-CoA reductase;
(4) Galactose epimerase;
(5) Galactokinase;
(6) Medium/short chain L-3-hydroxy acyl-CoA dehydrogenase;
(7) Medium-chain ketoacyl-CoA thiolase; and
(8) Tyrosinemia type III."
SECTION 2. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2010.
