HOUSE RESOLUTION
honoring the junior achievement of hawaii 2010 hawaii business hall of fame inductees.
WHEREAS, since 1990, the JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME has honored the state’s most distinguished business leaders for their outstanding contributions to free enterprise and the promise of a stronger society; and
WHEREAS, JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF HAWAII, INC. was founded in 1957 to educate and inspire young people to appreciate business and economics in order that they can improve their lives and their communities; and
WHEREAS, JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF HAWAII, INC. has created a working partnership among business, military, and education communities with the mission of ensuring that Hawaii’s children will have the opportunity to learn about the free-enterprise system; and
WHEREAS, through nearly 500 offices around the world, Junior Achievement reaches over nine million students a year in inner cities, suburbs, and rural areas; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME is to recognize business leaders who, through their life-long entrepreneurial and civic activities have made enduring contributions to the local economy through their work, and are figures of inspiration for Hawaii’s youth; and
WHEREAS, as a former Waikiki beach boy, ANTHONY R. GUERRERO has, over a 42 year banking career, skillfully led his teams through numerous expansions of First Hawaiian Bank leading to his position as Vice Chairman and Group Manager overseeing management of 63 bank branches in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan; and
WHEREAS, as an excellent role model for Hawaii's youth, ANTHONY R. GUERRERO, sets a perfect example for Hawaii's youth on how hard work and dedication can lead to limitless possibilities in the business world ; and
WHEREAS, with over 20 years in the practice of ophthalmology, DR. TYRIE JENKINS is recognized as one of the premier laser eye surgeons and business leaders in Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, DR. TYRIE JENKINS leads the way in community service such as providing free eye exams for 30 Cambodian orphans visiting Hawaii, leading a medical mission from Hawaii to the Western Samoa island of Sawaii, serving on a medical mission to Zhong Shan, China, and serving as a mentor with the Girl Scouts of Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, growing up and helping in his grandparents' store, BARRY K. TANIGUCHI learned the business from the ground up, and after attending college and working for outside firms as an accountant and CPA, was asked to come home to take the leadership of the family business; and
WHEREAS, BARRY K. TANIGUCHI gives back to the Big Island community ten-fold by serving on numerous civic organizations including serving on trade associations, professional organizations such as the Hawaii and American Society of CPAs, cultural associations, and is also actively involved with serving the Hawaii Community College and the University of Hawaii at Hilo; and
WHEREAS, on Friday, March 12, 2010, ANTHONY GUERRERO of First Hawaiian Bank, TYRIE JENKINS, M.D. of Tyrie Jenkins, M.D. Eye Care, and BARRY K. TANIGUCHI of the KTA Superstores will be inducted into the HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME for 2010; and
WHEREAS, these honorees join a distinguished group of 70 men and women who have been included into the HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME since its inception; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that it recognizes and honors JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF HAWAII, INC. and the 2010 inductees to the HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME for their outstanding contributions to free enterprise and the betterment of the State of Hawaii.
