HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

COMMENDING PEACE CORPS INDONESIA FOR REOPENING IN MID-2010 AFTER FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF ABSENCE.

 

 

 


      WHEREAS, Peace Corps was created in 1961 by Senator John F. Kennedy and has since trained and arranged for nearly 200,000 volunteers to serve in 139 host countries; and

 

     WHEREAS, Indonesia was one of the Peace Corps' earliest host countries, with volunteers serving briefly between 1963 and 1965; and

 

     WHEREAS, Indonesia is the third largest democracy in the world, the fourth most populous country in the world, and home of the largest Muslim population in the world; and

 

     WHEREAS, the United States and the Republic of Indonesia have signed an agreement to reopen a Peace Corps program in Indonesia in mid-2010; and 

 

     WHEREAS, the first group of approximately 25 volunteers will work as English teachers in high schools and teacher training institutions in Surabaya; and

 

     WHEREAS, Peace Corps Indonesia will encourage Americans and Indonesians to cooperate on Indonesia's education initiatives and will foster communication and working relationships between the two countries; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that this body commends Peace Corps Washington and Peace Corps Indonesia for reopening Indonesia in mid-2010 after 45 years; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Peace Corps Indonesia, Peace Corps Washington, the United States Embassy, the Indonesian Embassy, and USAID.
