HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO CONVENE A TASK FORCE TO report on the feasibility of providing WI-FI INTERNET ACCESS ON SCHOOL BUSES.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, on average, Hawaii public school students living in remote areas commute to the nearest public school by riding a school bus for up to fifty-six hours each month; and

 

     WHEREAS, access to the Internet via Wi-Fi technology on public school buses may turn the long bus rides into productive learning time; and

 

     WHEREAS, Wi-Fi internet access on school buses allows students to research school projects, work on homework assignments, and submit assignments electronically; and

 

     WHEREAS, some schools or districts in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, and Washington D.C., have implemented Wi-Fi technology on school buses; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2010, that the Department of Education is requested to establish a task force to research and report on the feasibility of providing Wi-Fi internet access on school buses on routes where one-way commutes exceed thirty minutes; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force is requested to include in its report estimates of the cost of Wi-Fi equipment, installation, service, and potential revenue sources; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body requests that the task force include representatives from the Department of Education's Office of Information Technology Services, the Department of Education Student Transportation Services Branch, one representative from each of the companies that provides school bus service in areas where one-way commutes exceed thirty minutes, parents from those remote areas, and teachers with students who live in those remote areas; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education is requested to submit a report of the task force's findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to this body not later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2011; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education.
