H.B. NO.

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

making an appropriation for the DEVELOPMENT and construction of a double hulled canoe.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

The legislature finds that city of Lahaina, Maui, has been trying to find a replacement for its Brig Carthaginian as a seaside attraction for visitors and residents.  In an effort to preserve Hawaiian traditions of its seafaring culture, Hui Wa'a O Kaulua spearheaded the construction of a double hulled canoe as a tourist attraction and learning tool.  Completion of the canoe would allow Maui's canoe community to participate in voyages, create additional jobs at Lahaina Harbor, and provide a teaching tool for schools, tour groups, visitors, and residents.  The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds for the completion of a double hulled canoe by Hui Wa'a O Kaulua.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2009-2010 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2010-2011 for Hui O Wa'a Kaulua for the construction of a double hulled canoe.

SECTION 2.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the county of Maui for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2009.
