A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

rELATING TO GYNECOLOGY.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 321, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§321‑     Gynecologic cancer surgery protocol.  (a)  Before a gynecologist schedules surgery for gynecologic cancer with metastasis in the abdominal area, the gynecologist shall give the patient the option of having either a gynecologist or a gynecologist oncologist perform the surgery."

     SECTION 2.  The department of health shall submit a report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2012.  The report shall include:

     (1)  Statistics on the number of gynecologic surgeries that have involved cancer that has metastasized to areas of the body outside of the female reproductive organs and required the services of a gynecologic oncologist;

     (2)  Statistics on the number of cases in which the cancer that had metastasized to areas of the body outside of the female reproductive organs was not diagnosed prior to the gynecologic surgery; and

     (3)  Recommendations, including suggested legislation, on improving methods and policies necessary to provide improved protocols in gynecological cancer surgery.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
