A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to physicians.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. (a) The department of health shall create a program to encourage access to medical care in rural areas of Hawaii. The program shall provide for the refunding of tuition and fees or the assumption of educational loans, if any, of students or graduates of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine who agree, prior to graduation, to enroll in a post-graduate medical residency or fellowship program that requires the individual to provide, after graduation, health care for five years in a hospital or clinic in a rural or medically-underserved area of the State.
(b) The director of health shall develop eligibility and placement criteria for the program in coordination with the dean and administration of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.
SECTION 2. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
