The purpose of this informational briefing is to receive presentations on the following initiative and agreement related to energy:
Hawaii Clean Energy
Initiative
In January 2008 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the
State of Hawaii and the U.S. Department of Energy. This agreement created
the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, which seeks to transform Hawaii’s energy
portfolio into a predominately renewable energy mix, moving away from Hawaii's
over-reliance on imported fossil fuels. Under the agreement, Hawaii is
positioned to become the testing ground for a portfolio of renewable and
efficient energy technologies, pioneering financial, policy, and business
models that can be replicated throughout the United States.
Elements of the MOU include: planning for the “structural transformation”
needed to help Hawaii develop renewable sources of energy and utilize energy
efficiency; fostering financial and policy innovations; supporting public
acceptance and awareness of renewable energy technologies; and building a
workforce to create and sustain a “clean energy economy.”
Presenters:
· Bill Parks, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Research & Development,
U.S. Department of Energy
· Jennifer Goto Sabas, Chief of Staff, Office of U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye
· Mary Werner, Manager of Integration Deployment, National Renewable Energy Laboratory
· Ralph Braccio, Booz Allen Hamilton
Energy Agreement Between State of Hawaii, Consumer Advocate and Hawaiian
Electric Companies
On October 20, 2008, an agreement was reached by the above parties stemming
from months of discussions and work on the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative.
The agreement seeks to reduce the process of moving the state forward to
a clean energy driven economy by accelerating regulatory changes.
Presenter: Robbie Alm, Executive Vice President-Public Affairs,
Hawaiian Electric Company
