THE SENATE

S.C.R. NO.

65

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

URGING THE MANAGEMENT OF HAWAIIAN AIRLINES AND THE AIR LINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION TO SWIFTLY NEGOTIATE A FAIR AND REASONABLE NEW LABOR CONTRACT.

WHEREAS, contract renegotiations between the pilots of Hawaiian Airlines represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International and the management of Hawaiian Airlines for an expired June 1, 2007, contract has been on-going for more than two years; and

WHEREAS, the more than four hundred Hawaiian Airlines pilots have been working under concessionary contract terms, both in and out of bankruptcy, for almost ten years and have consistently sacrificed pay, retirement, work rules, and quality of life to assist Hawaiian Airlines and its passengers whenever they were called upon to do so; and

WHEREAS, Hawaiian Airlines has been consistently profitable since 2004, even while in bankruptcy and when other airlines have gone out of business; and

WHEREAS, the management of Hawaiian Airlines has refused to negotiate reasonable contract terms with the pilots association to enable pilots to receive compensation comparable to their peers in the airline industry, even while Hawaiian Airlines has plans to spend $4,000,000,000 for new aircraft; and

WHEREAS, the failure to reach a quick and amicable agreement can affect the tourism and transportation industries two of the most vital components of the State's economy, and any potential strike or labor dispute involving Hawaiian Airlines could severely damage both industries and deepen the State's recession; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, the House of Representatives concurring, that the management of Hawaiian Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association, International are urged to do everything in their power to swiftly negotiate a fair and reasonable new contract that includes meaningful pay raises and other compensation for pilots, while recognizing Hawaiian Airline's need to remain competitive and financially viable; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the management of Hawaiian Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association, International are urged to recognize that peaceful resolution of disputes between labor and management should be the preferred goal of all unionized employers and employees in Hawaii; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the management of Hawaiian Airlines and Air Line Pilots Association, International are urged to strive to achieve this goal; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hawaiian Airlines and the President of the Air Line Pilots Association, International.
