A BILL FOR AN ACT
RELATING TO CORRECTIONS.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 353C, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§353C- Reentry intake services division; established; duties. (a) There is established a reentry intake services division under the department of public safety.
(b) The duties and responsibilities of the reentry intake services division are to:
(1) Ensure that the present and future reentry needs of persons committed to correctional facilities are being evaluated and met in an effective and appropriate manner;
(2) Assume all of the programs and services of the intake service center division, existing as of July 1, 2009;
(3) Provide additional reentry services to include, but not be limited to, working closely and collaborating with the furlough programs in each county that are currently managed by the department's institutions division;
(4) Work closely and collaborate with the Hawaii paroling authority; and
(5) Work closely and collaborate with the corrections program services division.
(c) The intake service center division shall be renamed the reentry intake services division, effective July 1, 2009."
SECTION 2. The department of public safety shall not receive any additional moneys in the department's operating budget to carry out the purposes of this Act. In addition, the renaming of the intake service center division to the reentry intake services division shall not have an adverse employment or economic impact on the intake service center division's current staff.
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2009.
