Reorganizes and renames the corrections program services division of DPS to the reentry services division, whereby the reentry services division will work closely with the furlough programs in each county that are managed by the institutions division to ensure that the reentry needs of inmates are being met.

A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to corrections.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 353C, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§353C-    Re-entry services division; established; duties.  (a)  There is established a reentry services division under the department of public safety.

     (b)  The duties and responsibilities of the reentry services division are to:

     (1)  Ensure that the present and future reentry needs of persons committed to correctional facilities are being evaluated and met in an effective and appropriate manner;

     (2)  Assume all of the programs and services of the corrections program services division; existing as of June 30, 2009; and

     (3)  Provide additional reentry services to include, but not be limited to, working closely with the furlough programs in each county that are currently managed by the department's institutions division.

     (c)  The corrections program services division shall be reorganized and named the reentry services division, effective July 1, 2009."

     SECTION 2.  The department of public safety shall not receive any additional moneys in the department's operating budget to carry out the purposes of this Act.  In addition, the reorganizing and renaming of the corrections program services division shall not have an adverse employment or economic impact on that division's current staff.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2009.
