A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to public safety.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 353C, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§353C‑    Emergency lighting in public meeting places.  (a)  There shall be required for every theater, public auditorium, and other similar public meeting place that does not have a natural light source and that has a maximum allowable capacity of       or more persons to be equipped with an emergency lighting system that will operate during an electrical power outage.

     (b)  For the purposes of this section, the following terms shall have the following meaning:

     "Public auditorium" means a facility generally open to the public where an audience may observe a live performance, including but not limited to performances involving theatrical works, music, dance, and speeches.

     "Theater" means a place where a variety of performing arts can take place to form a single artistic theme, including but not limited to speeches, comical routines, gestures, music, dance, visual arts, and other spectacles."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
