HOUSE RESOLUTION
encouraging the hawaii state legislature to allow legislators to wear aloha attire during floor sessions and encouraging the hawaii state judiciary to allow attorneys to wear aloha attire when appearing in state courts.
WHEREAS, except for Aloha Fridays, the Legislature has required its members to wear business attire during floor sessions -- jackets and ties for men, and appropriate apparel for women; and
WHEREAS, attorneys are required to wear similar attire when appearing in the courts of the State; and
WHEREAS, the reality of business attire in Hawaii is just the opposite -- jackets and ties have become the exception while aloha attire has become an acceptable dress for most occasions, including the office, where the wearing of aloha attire has not detracted from the decorum or efficiency of the workplace; and
WHEREAS, allowing legislators and attorneys to wear aloha attire on a daily basis would not only be practical and appropriate, given Hawaii's warm climate, it would also support the State's garment industry by featuring locally made products; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that this body is encouraged to allow its members to wear aloha attire on a daily basis and during floor sessions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Judiciary is encouraged to allow attorneys appearing in state courts to wear aloha attire; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, each member of the Legislature, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Administrative Director of the Courts, and the President of the Hawaii State Bar Association.
