HOUSE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING AND GENERAL SERVICES TO DEVELOP A PLAN TO INSTALL SIGNS IN THE STATE CAPITOL IN BOTH THE ENGLISH AND HAWAIIAN LANGUAGES.
WHEREAS, the preservation of the native language of Hawaii is an important part of preserving Hawaiian culture; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, the State recognized the Hawaiian language as one of two official state languages; and
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian language has enjoyed a vital renewal since it was established as an official state language; and
WHEREAS, currently, signage in the State Capitol building is available in only English; and
WHEREAS, the State can encourage the use of the Hawaiian language by changing the signs in the State Capitol to have all signs in both English and Hawaiian; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that the Department of Accounting and General Services is requested to develop a plan to have all signs in the State Capitol in both English and Hawaiian; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the plan:
(1) Designate the Hawaii Board on Geographic Names as the authority for translations and spelling concerning geographic features in Hawaii;
(2) Exempt the Hawaii State motto and Hawaii State Seal to avoid modification of the original artwork; and
(3) Include the cost of implementation;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Accounting and General Services is requested to submit any findings and recommendations to the Legislature not later than 20 days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2010; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Comptroller.
