HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING the hawaiian civic club of honolulu and the association of hawaiian civic clubs for their outstanding contributions and commitment to perpetuating the vision of, prince jonah kuhio kalaniana`ole pi`ikoi.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, on December 7, 1918, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi formed the first Hawaiian civic club, in the traditions of the ali‘i to provide for the well-being of their people; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1920, what became known as THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU established itself as a political voice for the native Hawaiian community when it successfully lobbied for passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act; and

 

     WHEREAS, for over nine decades, THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU has continued Prince Kuhio’s vision by fostering education, leadership development, and civic participation throughout the Hawaiian community; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU’s annual scholarship benefit fundraiser, the Holoku Ball, has generated thousands of dollars for higher education opportunities for Hawaiians while perpetuating Hawaiian formal elegance; and

 

     WHEREAS, on April 18, 1959, the growth of various Hawaiian civic clubs led to the creation of the ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS and its four councils--Hawai‘i, O‘ahu, Maui, and Kaua‘i; and

 

     WHEREAS, in March 1988, the Mainland Council was chartered as the fifth council of the ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS; and

 

     WHEREAS, today, there are 55 Hawaiian civic clubs located throughout the state of Hawai‘i and in the states of Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, Utah, Virginia, Washington state, and Tennessee; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaiian Civic Club members can be seen at public gatherings, marching in parades, testifying before the Legislature, organizing and conducting education forums on Hawaiian issues, and serving as cultural curators of such sacred sites as Ulupo Heiau and Kukaniloko; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaiian civic clubs have continued to expand their scholarship programs, benefiting thousands of Hawai‘i’s young people; and

 

     WHEREAS, the ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS continues to provide a strong voice for native Hawaiians at city, state, and federal levels; and

 

     WHEREAS, the ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS has advocated for the welfare of native Hawaiian culture, language, history, music, dance, health, economic development, social welfare, and nationhood; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that this body hereby commends and congratulates THE HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB OF HONOLULU and the ASSOCIATION OF HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUBS, on the occasion of their 90th and 50th anniversaries, respectively, for their outstanding contributions and commitment to perpetuating the vision of, Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole Pi‘ikoi, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
