HOUSE RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING LEILEHUA HIGH SCHOOL MULES BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2008 HONOLULU MARATHON/HAWAII HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION CROSS Country State Championship.
WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is always proud to recognize those select individuals who utilize their physical, mental, and emotional abilities to exemplify sportsmanship, fine teamwork, and goodwill to the people of our State; and
WHEREAS, throughout the season, the outstanding members of the LEILEHUA HIGH SCHOOL MULES BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM have displayed courage, grit, and determination in the face of challenge by utilizing their tenacity, mental resolve, stamina, and talent to successfully compete with the State's strongest runners; and
WHEREAS, on October 25, 2008, senior team member, Bryce Jenkins followed by teammates Margarito Martinez, Shannon Cosey, Noel Cabato, Jayson Dumaoal, and Evan Igarashi all finished the 3-mile course in the top 20 with a total score of 44 for a fourth consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association (OIA) title at the OIA Division Championships at Patsy Mink Central Oahu Regional Park, thereby qualifying for the State Championship; and
WHEREAS, at Hawaii Preparatory Academy, Kamuela, Hawaii, on October 31, 2008, Bryce Jenkins, overcoming injury, which would sideline him most of the season, won his third-straight individual title, only the second person in the state to accomplish this, with a time of 17:13:00 on one of the most challenging 3-mile cross country courses in the state with an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level and constantly changing terrain; leading the Mules seven-man team with a score of 75 to capture the 2008 Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Cross Country State Championship, repeating the 2007 victory over Kamehameha and Iolani which earned a public school state title for the first time in 24 years; and
WHEREAS, winning this State Championship has brought pride not only to Leilehua High School, but also the school district and the entire community as the team exemplified superb athletic skills and a high level of sportsmanship; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that this body hereby recognizes and congratulates the outstanding efforts of the LEILEHUA HIGH SCHOOL MULES BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM members: Noel Cabato, Michael Chambers, Shannon Cosey, Cody Dela Cuesta, Jayson Dumaoal, Evan Igarashi, Bryce Jenkins, Margarito Martinez, and Shannon White; coaches, Shawn Nakata and Lena Lynn Miyamoto; athletic director, James Toyota; and principal, Aloha Coleman, on winning the 2008 Honolulu Marathon/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Cross Country State Championship, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all their future endeavors.
