STATE OF HAWAII

 

 

 

 

 

HOUSE  RESOLUTION

 

 

requesting the mayor of each county to submit AN ARTWORK to be displayed at the state capitol in celebration of the 50th anniversary of statehood.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, Hawaii's history is unique and full of rich culture and heritage; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii became a territory of the United States in 1900, and in 1937, a Congressional committee concluded that Hawaii met the requirements for statehood, and in 1940, a statehood plebiscite required by Congress resulted in a two-to- one vote in favor of statehood; and

 

     WHEREAS, the process of becoming a state was temporarily delayed by World War II, but continued after the end of the war; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 1949, the Territorial Legislature approved the convening of a Constitutional Convention to frame a state constitution in hopes of expediting statehood; and

 

     WHEREAS, on March 18, 1959, President Eisenhower signed the Act to Provide for the Admission of the State of Hawaii, and statehood became official on August 21, 1959, upon the signing of a proclamation by the President; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii is also unique as an island state composed of several counties including Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai, and the City and County of Honolulu; and

 

     WHEREAS, while Hawaii is united as a state, its individual counties have unique qualities and characteristics that contribute to Hawaii's diverse appeal; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii has reached a landmark as a state and, in commemoration, the Hawaii 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission was formed to recognize the 50th state's historic milestone; and

 

     WHEREAS, the State Capitol building was designed to represent Hawaii's unique environmental and cultural characteristics, and is appropriately the gathering place for all of Hawaii; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that the Mayor of each county is requested to submit an artwork representing its cultural heritage to the Hawaii 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission to be displayed at the State Capitol in celebration of the 50th anniversary of statehood; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of each county and Chair of the Hawaii 50th Anniversary of Statehood Commission.
