WHEREAS, the birth announcement for President Barack Obama, Jr., born August 4th, 1961, in Honolulu, lists his first residence as a house at 6085 Kalaniana‘ole Highway near Kuli‘ou‘ou Road; and
WHEREAS, Barack Obama, Jr. spent most of his childhood and adolescent years in Honolulu, developing a character and intellect that includes a sense of aloha, an appreciation of multiculturalism, and an enlightened world view; and
WHEREAS, President Barack Obama stated that, "What's best in me, and what's best in my message, is consistent with the tradition of Hawai‘i", and First Lady Michelle Obama has said, "You can't really understand Barack until you understand Hawai‘i"; and
WHEREAS, upon graduating from high school and moving from Hawai‘i, Barack Obama, Jr. has maintained close ties with his home state, visiting resident family members and friends on a nearly annual basis to re-experience island life as a kama‘aina; and
WHEREAS, the people of Hawai‘i, inspired and proud that one of their own could aspire to become president of the United States, cast 71 percent of their presidential ballots for this keiki o ka‘aina, making Hawai‘i the state with the greatest Obama victory margin in the nation; and
WHEREAS, the State owns a 4,124 square foot parcel of land adjacent to the first home of the 44th President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, this historic site is on the route to several East O‘ahu attractions, including two that President Obama particularly enjoys--Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach--as well as the solemn site where he scattered the ashes of his late mother in 1995 and his grandmother in 2008; and
WHEREAS, the site is passed by tens of thousands of residents and visitors every day; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is urged to set aside state-owned land at 6091 Kalaniana‘ole Highway (TMK 3-8-003:055) as "President Barack Obama Birthplace State Park"; and
