HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE Board OF EDUCATION TO EXEMPT PUBLIC SCHOOLS ON MOLOKAI FROM THE single SCHOOL CALENDAR.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, section 49 of Act 51, Session Laws of Hawaii 2004, requires the Board of Education to adopt a single school calendar for all public schools; and

 

     WHEREAS, Act 51 recognizes the need for an overall state policy with respect to school calendars but also recognizes that not all school curricula is conducive to a single school calendar; and

 

WHEREAS, Act 51 exempts charter schools from the single school calendar; and

 

     WHEREAS, much like charter schools, the single school calendar does not suit the public schools on Molokai; and

 

     WHEREAS, Molokai's unique cultural heritage and geographical restrictions are inconsistent with a single school calendar; and

 

     WHEREAS, the schools in the Molokai complex area should be allowed to set their own school calendar to maximize limited school resources and to continue to provide a quality education for Molokai students; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, the Senate concurring, the Board of Education is requested to exempt the public schools on Molokai from the single school calendar; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, the Superintendent of Education, the Superintendent of the Molokai Complex Area, and Principals of Kaunakakai Elementary School, Kilohana Elementary School, Maunaloa Elementary School, Molokai High School, and Molokai Intermediate School.
