A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to voting.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 16, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§16- Prohibition on transmittal of vote information over telephone lines and the Internet; locked containers. (a) Beginning with elections taking place in 2010, voting information contained in any voting machine, including automatic tabulating equipment, shall not be transmitted over telephone lines, e-mail, or the Internet, whether wireless or wired.
(b) Any voting information contained in a voting machine, including automatic tabulating equipment, shall be printed on paper and transferred in locked containers directly to the state count center at the capitol; provided that if a voting machine uses electronic storage devices to record voting information, the storage devices may be transferred in locked containers directly to the state count center at the capitol, in lieu of paper printouts."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
