STAND. COM. REP. NO. 3471

Honolulu, Hawaii

RE:    S.C.R. No. 20

       S.D. 1

Honorable Colleen Hanabusa

President of the Senate

Twenty-Fourth State Legislature

Regular Session of 2008

State of Hawaii

Madam:

Your Committees on Health and Education, to which was referred S.C.R. No. 20 entitled:

"SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO ASSESS THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF REQUIRING CERVICAL CANCER VACCINATIONS FOR GIRLS BEFORE THEY ENTER THE SEVENTH GRADE,"

beg leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to request the Department of Health to assess the advantages and disadvantages of requiring cervical cancer vaccinations for girls before they enter the seventh grade.

Your Committees received testimony with comments on this measure from the Department of Health.

Your Committees find that the Department of Health's Immunization Branch convened a working group in 2007 that is currently working with Department and community stakeholders to review and update school immunization and examination requirements.  This working group should additionally be requested to assess the advantages and disadvantages of requiring cervical cancer vaccinations for girls before they enter the seventh grade.

Accordingly, your Committees have amended this measure requesting the working group to assess the advantages and disadvantages of requiring cervical cancer vaccinations for girls before they enter the seventh grade.

As affirmed by the records of votes of the members of your Committees on Health and Education that are attached to this report, your Committees concur with the intent and purpose of S.C.R. No. 20, as amended herein, and recommend its adoption in the form attached hereto as S.C.R. No. 20, S.D. 1.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committees on Health and Education,
