STAND. COM. REP. NO. 3684
Honolulu, Hawaii
RE: H.C.R. No. 33
H.D. 1
Honorable Colleen Hanabusa
President of the Senate
Twenty-Fourth State Legislature
Regular Session of 2008
State of Hawaii
Madam:
Your Committee on Health, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 33, H.D. 1, entitled:
"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER AS NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER MONTH AND GYNECOLOGICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH,"
begs leave to report as follows:
The purpose of this measure is to raise awareness about the symptoms of ovarian cancer by acknowledging the month of September as National Ovarian Cancer Month and Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month. This measure also urges health care providers to develop and implement educational strategies for the early detection and cure of ovarian cancer.
Your Committee received testimony in support of this measure from the American Cancer Society.
Your Committee finds that the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately twenty-two thousand new cases of ovarian cancer in 2007 in the United States and an estimated fifteen thousand deaths from this disease.
Your Committee further finds that a joint statement released in June 2007 by the American Cancer Society, the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, states that recent medical studies show identifiable symptoms exist for ovarian cancer including pelvic or abdominal pain, bloating, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, or urinary symptoms.
Your Committee recognizes the importance of educating and informing women of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Studies have shown that early detection increases a woman's chance of being cured of ovarian cancer.
As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Health that is attached to this report, your Committee concurs with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 33, H.D. 1, and recommends its adoption.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Health,
