STAND. COM. REP. NO. 3595

Honolulu, Hawaii

RE:    H.C.R. No. 276

       H.D. 1

Honorable Colleen Hanabusa

President of the Senate

Twenty-Fourth State Legislature

Regular Session of 2008

State of Hawaii

Madam:

Your Committees on Education and Human Services and Public Housing, to which was referred H.C.R. No. 276, H.D. 1, entitled:

"HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK DEDICATE ITS SCHOOL IN HONOR OF MYRON "PINKY" THOMPSON, BY CHANGING ITS NAME TO THE "MYRON THOMPSON SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK","

beg leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to request that the University of Hawaii School of Social Work dedicate its school in honor of Myron "Pinky" Thompson, by changing its name to the "Myron Thompson School of Social Work".

Testimony in support of the measure was submitted by the Hawaii United States Senators, the National Association of Social Workers, the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools, and one individual.  Testimony in opposition to the measure was submitted by the University of Hawaii.

Your Committees find that Myron "Pinky" Thompson was a social worker and community leader in Hawaii who made significant contributions to the Native Hawaiian community.  He was a graduate of Punahou School, who earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Colby College and a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Hawaii.  Mr. Thompson served as Executive Director of the Department of Social Services and Housing, Executive Director of the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center, State Administrator under Governor John A. Burns, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Bishop Estate where he was instrumental in developing early childhood education programs through Kamehameha Schools.  This measure requests the University of Hawaii to honor and recognize Myron "Pinky" Thompson through the dedication and name change of the School of Social Work in his honor.  Your Committees support the recognition of Myron Thompson and believe that such dedication is befitting of his accomplishments and contributions to the people of Hawaii.

As affirmed by the records of votes of the members of your Committees on Education and Human Services and Public Housing that are attached to this report, your Committees concur with the intent and purpose of H.C.R. No. 276, H.D. 1, and recommend its adoption.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committees on Education and Human Services and Public Housing,
