SENATE RESOLUTION
requesting the department of education to implement a renewable energy pilot project at nanakuli high school using solar and wind energy.
WHEREAS, Hawaii's dependence on petroleum makes the state vulnerable to supply and market disruptions and negatively impacts the environment; and
WHEREAS, a renewable energy pilot project with the installation of photovoltaic and windmill systems using solar and wind energy, respectively, could produce electricity to power a school facility, including air conditioning; and
WHEREAS, the installation of a net energy metered system would allow the school to connect and feed any unused electricity produced by the renewable energy systems to the electric grid for the use of the surrounding community; and
WHEREAS, the renewable energy project would encourage and promote increased awareness of renewable energy technologies among students, teachers, and the community; and
WHEREAS, the energy cost savings resulting from the renewable energy systems over the long-term will make up for the initial cost of installation of the systems; and
WHEREAS, Nanakuli High School, located on the west side of the island of Oahu, receives the most sun and wind on the island and is an ideal location to implement a renewable energy pilot project; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that the Department of Education is requested to implement a net energy metered renewable energy pilot project at Nanakuli High School on the west side of Oahu using solar and wind energy; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education, Principal of Nanakuli High School, and Superintendent of Education.
