SENATE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO AUTHORIZE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL MONUMENT FOR WOMEN IN WASHINGTON, D.C., TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO LEADERSHIP BY AMERICA'S WOMEN.
WHEREAS, the 2007 International Women's Leadership Conference, hosted by the State of Hawaii, inspired and empowered women to enhance the understanding of what it means to be a woman leader; and
WHEREAS, the presenters (all women) at the International Women's Leadership Conference were chosen for their exemplary leadership role models, including business and government executives, community organization directors, and scientific experts from all over the world; and
WHEREAS, the International Women's Leadership Conference lifted the vision of women in business, government service, and all professions to higher sights, higher standards, and exciting and attainable futures; and
WHEREAS, particularly for women in Hawaii, the International Women's Leadership Conference helped them realize their potential and collective strength for contribution of themselves in leadership positions in their communities; and
WHEREAS, the International Women's Leadership Conference focused on the need for development of strong leadership skills for women by encouraging every conference participant to explore ideas and to reach out in their communities to make a difference, day by day; and
WHEREAS, today's women need to bequeath goodness, education, wisdom, and the keys to leadership and success to the following generations, enabling and encouraging women, especially young professionals and students, to reach for the stars; and
WHEREAS, in addition to private and government sector women leaders, the military has its share of women leaders from the Revolutionary War to the present, who either served as fighting forces or military wives; and
WHEREAS, women in the United States have given of themselves to take leadership roles in every field of endeavor while supporting and nurturing their families; and
WHEREAS, a November 20, 2000, article in Business Week Online, stated that, by and large, studies show that women executives, when rated by their peers, subordinates, and bosses, score higher than their male counterparts on a wide variety of measures--from producing high-quality work to goal-setting to mentoring employees; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Title 40, section 8903, United States Code, Congressional authorization is necessary to establish commemorative works, defined under section 8902 to include memorials in the District of Columbia, to "reflect a consensus of the lasting national significance of the subjects involved" (section 8901); and
WHEREAS, a national monument in Washington, D.C., dedicated to recognizing and honoring the contribution to leadership by America's women is an ideal means of enshrining the past achievements of women leaders and inspiring future women leaders; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that the United States Congress is requested to authorize the establishment of a National Monument for Women in Washington, D.C., to recognize and honor the contributions to leadership by America's women; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Majority Leader of the United States Senate; the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; the Minority Leader in the United States Senate; the Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives; and the Governor of Hawaii.
