SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII to STUDY THE FEASIBILITY OF TRANSFERRING THE University of Hawaii at MANOA ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND ATHLETICS AT ANY OTHER CAMPUS in the university of hawaii system TO A SINGLE ADMINISTRATIVE ENTITY WITHIN THE university of hawaii SYSTEM.

 

 

     WHEREAS, the recent success of the University of Hawaii football team underscored the pride that university athletics engenders throughout the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, all athletic teams in the University of Hawaii System represent the collective students of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the University of Hawaii at West Oahu, and the seven community colleges; and

 

     WHEREAS, while the inadequate athletic facilities and resources of the University of Hawaii at Manoa athletic teams have been highlighted in the media recently, the resources and facilities of the athletic teams at the University of Hawaii at Hilo are even more deplorable; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii's community colleges are totally without access to competitive collegiate athletics; and

 

     WHEREAS, the increased attention given to collegiate athletics in Hawaii clearly demonstrates that the athletic teams of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and all other campuses represent the whole State and, accordingly, the administration of these programs should include statewide representation and be conducted by one entity, statewide; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, the House of Representatives concurring, that the University of Hawaii is requested to study the feasibility of transferring the athletic departments of all its campuses to a single entity for administrative purposes; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the administration of university athletics include representation from and for all campuses in the University of Hawaii System; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the University of Hawaii is requested to submit a report of its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2009; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the University of Hawaii System, the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, and the Chancellors of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, the University of Hawaii at West Oahu, Hawaii Community College, Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College, Windward Community College, Leeward Community College, Kauai Community College, and Maui Community College.
