THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

937

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2007

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school program.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  2007 marks the tenth anniversary of the legislative mandate requiring the creation of the Nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school, a Hawaiian language medium laboratory school open to all ethnicities and affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Hilo and a parallel to the English language medium laboratory school at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The year 2007 also signifies the twentieth anniversary of the first cohort of Hawaiian immersion students entering the state public school system and Nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school's first graduating class.  Enrollment has now grown to the point where facilities are inadequate to support this important state laboratory school.  The Nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school has never received any funds to house its state programs, which innovatively combines both department of education and charter school structures.

The purpose of this Act to appropriate funding to the Nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school for construction and maintenance of its facilities and other educational program needs.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $              , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2007-2008, for construction and maintenance of facilities and for educational program needs at the Nawahiokalani'opu'u laboratory school.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2007.
