A BILL FOR AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. In 2013, the National Museum of the United States Army will open in the heart of the national capitol region. The National Museum of the United States Army is a long-overdue tribute to the service and sacrifice of soldiers from colonial times to the present. The museum will preserve the rich history of the Army and provide a million visitors annually with an appreciation of the Army's contributions to the nation.
For the past two hundred thirty-one years, the Army has protected the United States and its citizens from all enemies, domestic and foreign. Soldiers in colonial times to the present have ensured the freedoms and protected the liberties enjoyed today by every person living in the United States. Courage, commitment, service, and sacrifice have been the hallmarks of those who served in the Army's ranks. The Army has never had a national museum to focus on the history and heritage of the American soldier.
Hawaii's veterans are a major segment of the history of the United States Army. The 100th Battalion and the 442nd Infantry Division in World War II, the soldiers who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and the troops from Schofield Barracks who are currently deployed to the Middle East, are tributes to Hawaii's heroic tradition of military service.
The purpose of this Act is to make an appropriation for the design, construction, and exhibits of the National Museum of the United States Army.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , which is equivalent to $1 for every United States army veteran living in Hawaii on the effective date of this Act, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the design, construction, and exhibits of the National Museum of the United States Army.
The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of defense for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
