A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES FOR AKULE FISH MONITORING.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that to understand akule fish activity, there is a need to collect and interpret data about akule fish movements and habits of migration from Pearl harbor to Ka‘ena point, Oahu.

     SECTION 2.  (a)  The department of land and natural resources, division of aquatic resources, shall increase the number of commercial catch reporting grids from two to four along the western coast of Oahu in the sector between Barber's point and Ka‘ena point by dividing catch grid 402, spanning the area between Barber's point and Maili point, and catch grid 403, spanning the area between Maili point and Ka‘ena point, each into two subgrids. 

     (b)  Catch grid 402 shall be subdivided to create:

     (1)  Catch grid 402-A to cover the area from Barber's point to Kahe point; and

     (2)  Catch grid 402-B to cover the area from Kahe point to Maili point.

     (c)  Catch grid 403 shall be subdivided to create:

     (1)  Catch grid 403-A to cover the area from Maili point to Kepuhi point; and

     (2)  Catch grid 403-B to cover the area from Kepuhi point to Ka‘ena point.

     SECTION 3.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $         or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the department of land and natural resources, in conjunction with the Hawaii institute of marine biology, to hire a contractor to tag and monitor akule fish in the catch grids along the leeward coast of Oahu from Pearl harbor to Ka‘ena point, as more fully described in section 2.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources, in conjunction with the Hawaii institute of marine biology, for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
