A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO EPIDEMIOLOGISTS.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

     SECTION 1.  Chapter 321, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§321-  Epidemiologists. The department of health may establish up to two permanent or temporary exempt positions known as epidemiologists for the purpose of investigating diseases and injuries that threaten the public health and safety.  The positions shall be appointed by the director without regard to chapter 76."

     SECTION 2.  The department of health shall submit a report to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2009 on the status of establishing and filling the epidemiologist positions.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
