A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

relating to state heritage.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Hawaii heritage task force.  (a)  There is established a Hawaii heritage task force to protect unique sites and buildings that characterize Hawaiian culture and heritage.  The task force shall establish and maintain the Hawaii heritage list.  The list shall be comprised of sites and buildings determined worthy of preservation and protection from demolition and not already part of the historic preservation division's inventory of historic properties.  The task force shall consist of fifteen members as follows:

     (1)  One member residing in each of the counties of Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii;

     (2)  Two members residing in the city and county of Honolulu;

     (3)  Three non-governmental experts from each of the disciplines of architecture, archaeology, and history and culture;

     (4)  The director or director's designee from the department of land and natural resources;

     (5)  The governor or governor's designee;

     (6)  Two members from the senate appointed by senate president;

     (7)  Two members from the house of representatives appointed by the speaker of the house of representatives; and

     (8)  The director or director's designee from the department of business, economic development, and tourism.

     (b)  The members shall serve without compensation but shall be allowed their actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

     (c)  The task force is established within the department of land and natural resources for administrative purposes only.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $        or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 to carry out the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
