THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

2250

TWENTY-FOURTH LEGISLATURE, 2008

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE HAWAII HOUSING AUTHORITY TO upgrade fire safety systems.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that some of the State's poorest families at Kuhio park terrace have lived without a fire alarm system for years.  The legislature finds that this situation poses a serious fire safety issue for the residents and a potential liability for the State.  The legislature further finds that other state housing projects are lacking in fire safety systems, particularly fire alarms and water feeds to each floor.

The purpose of this Act is to make an appropriation for the installation or upgrade of fire safety systems in public housing projects.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $10,000,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for installation or upgrade of fire safety systems in public housing projects, including but not limited to, fire alarms and water feeds to every floor.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the Hawaii public housing authority for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2008.
