HOUSE RESOLUTION
congratulating first hawaiian bank on the celebratory occasion of its 150th anniversary in hawaii.
WHEREAS, the people of the State of Hawaii are proud to recognize those organizations that faithfully serve the community and contribute to the overall well-being of the state; and
WHEREAS, in response to a need for comprehensive and dependable banking services, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK was originally founded in 1858 as Bishop & Co., by local businessmen Charles Reed Bishop and partner William A. Aldrich and became the first successful bank in the Kingdom of Hawaii with its first-day deposits totaling $4,784.25; and
WHEREAS, in 1919, Bishop & Co., was incorporated as the Bank of Bishop & Co., Ltd., and through the decades changed its name to Bishop First National Bank of Honolulu (1929), Bishop National Bank of Hawaii at Honolulu (1933), Bishop National Bank of Honolulu (1956), and the First National Bank of Hawaii (1960), finally evolving to its current name, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK, in 1969; and
WHEREAS, since the beginning of Hawaii's sugar cane and pineapple industries in the late 1800's, through the swell of tourism which coincided with statehood in 1959, to the bustling, modern Hawaii of today, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK has always been there, constantly growing and adjusting to accommodate the needs of the state and its people; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK opened its headquarters, the state-of-the-art First Hawaiian Center, which quickly became the center of downtown Honolulu, a uniquely-shaped building offering panoramic views of Oahu and the Pacific, and an art gallery showcasing the work of local artists; and
WHEREAS, with assets totaling $12.6 billion, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK has grown to include 58 branches throughout Hawaii, three branches in Guam, two in Saipan, an offshore branch in Grand Cayman, British West Indies, and a representative office in Tokyo, Japan; and
WHEREAS, FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK is admirably the state's largest corporate giver, having contributed to over 350 nonprofit agencies in 2007 and providing millions of dollars for health, education, human services, cultural, art, and religious programs throughout Hawaii; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that this body hereby commends and congratulates FIRST HAWAIIAN BANK, Hawaii's oldest and largest financial institution, on its 150th anniversary in Hawaii, and extends its best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
