STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

URGING THE GOVERNOR TO DECLARE NOVEMBER 2008 AS DOMESTIC HARMONY AWARENESS MONTH.

WHEREAS, domestic harmony is a natural outflow of the value native Hawaiians place on `ohana, which encompasses both day-to-day family living and the relationships within the community as a whole; and

WHEREAS, domestic harmony is an expression of the aloha that family members demonstrate for one another, whether children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or others considered extended family; and

WHEREAS, deeply rooted respect for oneself and others is the foundation of domestic harmony, intertwined with an understanding of the connection between one's attitudes and actions; and

WHEREAS, the concept of domestic harmony encourages individuals to provide a spiritual uplift for their families, and provide hope for the community and the world-at-large by allowing their aloha to serve as a model for others to emulate; and

WHEREAS, individuals, educators, businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies alike can all contribute toward domestic harmony by reaching out and assisting our  families, and addressing the concerns and challenges faced by families with compassion and empathy; and

WHEREAS, recent incidents of domestic violence and violence against children have brought the concept of domestic harmony to the forefront of public awareness; and

WHEREAS, the Mayors of the Counties of Kauai, Maui, Hawaii and Honolulu have already declared the month of November 2007 as Domestic Harmony month; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fourth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2008, that the Governor is urged to declare November 2008, Domestic Harmony Awareness Month; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Human Services coordinate with non-profit groups and county agencies in the State to promote Domestic Harmony Awareness month; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the mayor of each county, and the Director of Human Services.
